묵직한 고요한 축적의 냄새
웅숭깊은 은근한 뿌연
매케한
군불지피고 남은듯한 파삭한듯 녹녹한
재를 쑤실때 나는 냄새
헌책 냄새
비 1의 냄새.
쌉쌉하고 음습한
축축하고 눅눅한
진하고 농밀한듯 꽉 조여진
쥐죽은듯 조용한
포르말린 냄새
은밀한 신산辛酸한
쇳냄새
성냥킬때 나는 유황냄새
비 2의 냄새.
젖은 풀과 나무의 냄새
계곡에 솔방울 떨어지는 냄새
마롱마롱 말간 투명한듯 온화한
고연固然한 냄새

우연히 브뤼겔의 그림을 보았는데 한장의 그림속에 수백명의 인간 군상, 수백의 각자의 사연들이 이야기들이 개개인의 성격이 방식들이 너무나도 흥미롭게 모두 한폭에 고스란히 담겨있는것 같았다. 한참 서서 멍하니 봤다. 작가는 얼마나 많은 사람들에 관심이 있었고 또 관찰한것일까.
어떤 글을 쓰다보면 나는 한사람의 성격을 나타내기 위해서 대화들과 크고 작은 사건들, 캐릭터를 살리기위한 어느쯤 일관된 행동 패턴의 끊임없는 묘사를 하고 사건이 두번이 되고 세번이 되다보면 어떤 캐릭터에도 그렇게 단정짓듯 끝내질수가 없고 예측할수도 없고 그렇다고 그들에게 스스로의 생명력을 불어넣는 것도 할수 없어지는데... 결국은 아무것도 완성되지 못하는 이야기들 어쩔것인가. 너무도 지금의 나같다.
